Avalon, The Midiri Brothers. Benny Goodman fans! You've got to hear this to believe it. Clarinetist Joe Midiri really does sound like the great Goodman. A lot of reputable jazz critics agree. Here's just one sample: "Joe Midiri is probably the spiritual descendant of Benny Goodman. Yes, he is that good." -- Ed Wismer, Sentinel-Ledger. This CD presents the charts of the two famous Goodman groups -- the Trio and the Sextet. In the trio, Joe Midiri is on clarinet, brother Paul Midiri on drums brings back memories of Gene Krupa with his great brush work, and Joe Holt on piano demonstrates the influence of Teddy Wilson. In the sextette Paul Midiri switches to the vibes in a style very reminiscent of Lionel Hampton. There are many old Benny Goodman favorites here, including Slipped Disk, Poor Butterfly, China Boy and the title song, Avalon. Available on CD ($15) or cassette ($12), shipping included. To order -- Joe Midiri, P.O. Box 961, Mays Landing, NJ 08830; 609-601-1099.
